THE CAFE-S PROGRAM

The lack of adequate knowledge in mathematics often handicaps students in all scientific disciplines when they begin their studies. In partnership with HSeT, the Faculty of Science of the University of Geneva has created  CAFE-S, a novel program in mathematics to help new students to mend their gap.
This program  offers self-learning and self-assessment thanks to a cooperation agreement signed by the Faculty of Science with an international academic website, OMB+, hosted by the University of Aachen (Germany) that covers the math requirements in chemistry and biochemistry, biology, pharmaceutical sciences, earth and environmental sciences, as well as an online tutoring program to help future students fill in gaps in their math skills. The Faculty of Sciences of Geneva implemented a local face to face tutoring program that took place in September 2022 .

The CAFE-S program will gradually be extended to other disciplines, including in particular digital skills in 2023.

DAY 1 CAFE-S 2022: THE LARGE AUDITORIUM IS FULL!

CAFE-S 2022: A GREAT SUCCESS

In the week before the start of the Fall 2022 semester, CAFÉ-S held a full four-day training camp in one of the large auditoriums of the Geneva School of Science. On the program, a refresher course in mathematics before starting a scientific bachelor degree at the University. Integrals, linear algebra, and matrices were on the menu for this week: all subjects that are not equally covered according to the study plans of the different institutions in Switzerland, France or other countries. The tutors were advanced math and physics students who had received special training from the University to mentor the students.
The training camp was a great success. Attendance was really high with more than a hundred students sitting on the benches of one of the large auditoriums of the Faculty of Science. Both tutors and students enjoyed the training camp very much – according to one of the participants, tutors “explain very well and are very open and friendly”. In fact, students felt that they gained significantly by attending the course!

MATH ARE INDEED IMPORTANT IN SCIENCES !
