Deshnee Achary, a student of the International Master of Vaccinology (IMVACC) class 2021, working at Pfizer vaccines in Johannesburg South Africa, received an award from the former President of South Africa Thabo Mbeki and The University of South Africa Principal and Vice-Chancellor (VC), Professor Puleng LenkaBula, who honored her for the work she has done in vaccines for the past 17years.
In her thank you speech she spoke about empowerment through education, highlighting the importance of using the education for the greater of mankind “When you are educated you are empowered and encouraged, and you have the power to change your life, your community around you and most importantly you have the power to educate others.”
She also touched on the topic of vaccine resistance and hesitancy and how fake news miscommunication can lead to people making bad decisions about their health which leads to disease, increased burden on the healthcare system and increased mortality.

Duduzile Ndwandwe, from South Africa, has defended with success her IMVACC Master thesis entitled “Prevalence and determinants of missed opportunities for vaccination in South Africa: a multi-level analysis”. She has been awarded the diploma and 60 ECTS from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland.
Duduzile Ndwandwe was honored in 2021 by the South Africa Medical Research Council as a champion woman. She has published 31 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact factor journals and is the team leader for clinical trial registration and vaccine implementation research projects at Cochrane South Africa, where she shares her vaccinology expertise with colleagues.
In addition, she serves on various global COVID-19 clinical research networks. In her private capacity, Duduzile organised a Career Expo for High School learners from underprivileged communities in July 2019.

The Board has appointed two new members,
Armelle, Phalipon, PhD, Research Director at Institut Pasteur, Paris to replace Nicolas Fasel from the Faculty of Biology and Medicine, University of Lausanne, who decided to leave the Board.
François Verrey, MD, Emeritus Professor, Zurich University, to replace Jonathan Fuchs from the Public Health Institute of San Francisco. The Board expresses its gratitude for their commitment and contribution over the past years.

The 2020 Biobanking course that started on March 6th 2020
ended on December 1st 2020 with 4 Round table sessions.
Out of the 10 participants, 9 passed the final exam and
received a certificate with 5 ECTS credits from the University
of Lausanne
This biobanking course organized by the Pasteur Institute Bioresources network (PIBnet), the European Virus Archive goes Global consortium (EVAg), and HSeT aimed to enhance the transfer of knowledge on biobanking by providing an online and practical training. An three months Online training period in the spring was followed by 4 round tables to present and discussion practical aspects related to biobanking including legal, quality and logistic issues, as well as examples of viral biobanks their role, organization and sustainability. The training period terminated with a final exam with a certificate of 5 ECTS credits from the University of Lausanne.

The 16 students of the class 2020 have completed the module 2
“Vaccine development” and the module exam. 15 students have
successfully passed the exam and received an attestation with
15 ETCS credits.

The University of Lausanne (UNIL) is offering an International Master in Vaccinology (IMVACC) developed by the Swiss Vaccine Research Institute (SVRI) and the Health Sciences e-Training Foundation (HSeT) in collaboration with the Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV).
IMVACC comprises one year of on-line teaching of vaccinology followed by a one year master thesis on a vaccine-related activity (industry, basic or translational research, regulatory affairs, etc.). The thesis project can be carried out in the trainee’s institution or in a hosting laboratory. Graduates will gain a broad knowledge of how vaccines are designed, developed, manufactured and implemented through public health programs.
